Bowen Therapy in Totnes & Exeter

Back & Shoulder Pain, Whiplash & Migraine Treatment

The UK & Ireland's largest professional association

The Bowen Technique is a soft tissue corrective therapy and involves the use of fingers or thumbs on precise points of certain muscles, ligaments, tendons or fascia. The Bowen Technique consists of a series of gentle rolling connective tissue moves on skin (or through light clothing). A treatment session usually lasts about an hour.

The Bowen Technique can be extremely effective for musculo-skeletal problems such as Lower Back Pain, Whiplash, Migraine, Frozen Shoulder, Shoulder Pain, Sciatica and Sports Injuries.

Bowen Therapy is considered safe for any age group including young children and new born babies as well as the elderly and infirm.

Common conditions that are treated using the Bowen Technique include: Back Pain, Neck Pain, Scoliosis, Sports Injuries, Migraines, Frozen Shoulder, Shoulder Pain, Shoulder Problems,Sciatica, RSI, Chronic Fatigue, Fibromyalgia, ME, Respiratory Problems, Arthritis, Infant Colic, Sleep Problems.

Latest research has also shown that Bowen Therapy can be very effective with pain management and muscle co-ordination for Multiple Sclerosis. There has also been an eight year study on the effects of the Bowen Technique upon children with Cerebral Palsy, Dyspraxia and other learning difficulties, the results of which are extremely encouraging and have led to the development of a particular style of the Bowen Technique known as “Fascia Bowen” by Howard Plummer who I have also had the pleasure of studying with.

Research: Bowen Therapy for Shoulder Pain and Neck Pain
A study into the effect of Bowen Therapy on shoulder or neck pain was conducted in the summer of 2008. 271 clients new to Bowen were treated and of these 86% showed a full or partial recovery after only 3 treatments.
Shoulder and neck pain can be particularly debilitating especially where there is restriction as in adhesive capsulitis or frozen shoulder. It can also be linked to emotional problems and where the client is experiencing particularly stressful situations.  Shoulder and neck pain can be linked to RSI and carpal tunnel problems which are conditions that can respond well to Bowen Therapy.

Research: Bowen Therapy for Migraine
The research was carried out over a six week period; each participant received three Bowen treatments. The participants had all been suffering Migraines for at least 10 years, some for over 30.The results were very positive; of the 39 participants in the program 31 volunteers reported an improvement in their migraine condition. Migraine can be triggered by a wide range of stimuli and the effects debilitating for sufferers. Bowen can provide fast and effective pain relief and in some cases permanent correction that can last up to two years.

Research: Bowen Therapy for Back Pain
A study into the effects of Bowen Therapy on Back Pain was conducted in June 2007. The outcome was on the whole very satisfying, not to mention revealing, with almost 90% of treatments given resulting in either a complete or partial recovery.
By triggering a re-balancing of the muscles around the lumbar and pelvic areas, Bowen Therapy may help to stabilise a weak area, reduce compression around the nerve roots or improve circulation to the spinal discs, muscles and joints.
Bowen therapy helps to reduce pain and also improve range of movement throughout the body.
