The treatment

Never heard of it?

Bowen Technique came to Europe in 1992, and is now the fastest growing complimentary therapy. The name comes from Tom Bowen who was born in 1916 in Australia. He left school at 14 and trained as a carpenter. He later had a job at a cement works in Victoria where he began to work as a self styled osteopath in the evenings. His clinic grew to the point where he was reckoned to be treating 13,000 patients a year up until his death in 1982.

What is Bowen?
The technique consists of a series of moves using thumbs and fingers on certain points around the body, making rolling type moves over soft tissue – i.e. muscle, ligaments or tendons. In between each set of moves I will leave the room to allow a response to take effect and let the work settle in.
The moves are quite gentle, and the client should experience little or no discomfort during the treatment, although there may be one or two areas that are more sensitive.
The Bowen Technique is generally considered to be a safe and effective tool particularly useful when other treatments are unsuitable, especially in acute cases like the infirm, the elderly and very small children.

What can Bowen Treat?
Common conditions that are treated using the Bowen Technique include: Back pain, neck pain, Scoliosis, sports injuries, migraines, frozen shoulder, Sciatica, RSI, Chronic Fatigue, Fibromyalgia, ME, respiratory problems, Arthritis, infant colic, sleep problems, and eating disorders. Latest research has also shown that Bowen Therapy can be very effective with pain management and muscle co-ordination for Multiple Sclerosis. There has also been an 8 year study on the effects of the Bowen Technique upon children with Cerebral Palsy, Dyspraxia and other learning difficulties, the results of which are extremely encouraging and have led to the development of a particular style of the Bowen Technique known as “Fascia Bowen” by Howard Plummer who I have also had the pleasure of studying with.
